Post-traumatic stress disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It is unclear as to why some people experience PTSD and others do not

PTSD usually develops within 90 days of the trauma, but may take longer. According to the American Psychiatric Association, symptoms last approximately 3 months in about half of those who get PTSD. Others may experience symptoms that come and go over several years. Common symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Recurring, intrusive, and distressing memories of the event (e.g. flash backs, panic attacks, etc.)
  • Avoiding situations that remind you of the event.
  • Becoming emotionally numb and withdrawing.
  • Difficulty sleeping and concentrating, and fearing for your personal safety.

Treatment options for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may include:

  • Counseling
  • Medication (e.g. Antidepressants, anti-anxiety)
  • Talking to family or friends about the event. Or, encouraging the victim to talk about the event. How parents react to the dog bite can affect the child.
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle - exercise, proper nutrition, proper rest.
