Pit Bulls Involved in One Out of Three Fatal AttacksNovember 2005 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) has found that pit bulls were responsible for about a third of more than 200 fatal dog attacks in the United States between 1979 and 1998. In response to the continuing flow of bad news concerning pit bull attacks, cities and states are toughening their rules about pit bulls. In San Francisco, it’s now the law that ALL pit bulls must be sterilized. The law, fines owners up to $1,000 if they do not spay or neuter their pit bulls. In other pit bull related news, Contra Costa County, across the bay from San Francisco, instituted new rules for canine ownership. Permits are required for dogs considered potentially dangerous and felons are prohibited from owning dangerous dogs.
