Dog safety tips for parents
Parents should teach their children the following basic dog safety tips,
and review these tips with your children on a regular basis:
-
Never approach an unfamiliar dog.
-
Never run away from a dog and scream. The dog's natural instinct is
to chase. You should teach your child to "stay still like a tree,"
with hands at the child's sides. The child should not make eye
contact with the dog or speak to the dog. The child should just
"stay still like a tree" until the dog goes away.
-
When approached by an unfamiliar dog, "stay still like a tree."
-
If knocked over by a dog, roll into a ball, keep quiet, don't look
at the dog, and "stay still like a log."
-
Always avoid direct eye contact with a dog.
-
Never play with a dog unless an adult is present.
-
Immediately report stray dogs or dogs who are displaying unusual
behavior to an adult.
-
Never disturb a dog who is sleeping, eating, or tending to puppies.
